Meet Orange County-based lifestyle photographer Alexis McElwee.

Hola! Today I’m sharing my interview with modern lifestyle maternity, newborn + family photographer Alexis McElwee of Alexis Alana Photography. I have loved seeing Alexis’s work since I came across her page on Instagram 3 years ago. Her images caught my eye because they come across so natural, beautiful and genuine. I loved her work so much that I reached out to have her capture a nursery design that I just completed at the time (2016) and since then she has photographed 4 of my interior design projects. So I can tell you with complete confidence that not only is she an amazing photographer, but an amazing person, wife & mama as well! Let’s take a peek into the life of photographer Alexis and you’ll see for yourself what I’m talking about…

RM: When did you start your photography business and how did you decide to specialize in kids and families?

AM: I started taking photos (of my first baby) and doing workshops to learn more about 7 years ago. And with the encouragement of my husband and family I opened up my business about 5 years ago. I started off second shooting for weddings but quickly found my heart and soul was in the beauty of motherhood, newborns and families. There is something so beautiful about growing families and capturing all the details you want to remember.

RM: As a wife and mama of 3, (with another one on the way!) what advice can you give to new moms trying to balance life’s daily activities with work?

AM: Oh this is a tough one for sure. I still struggle with the daily balancing act of motherhood and work, and the best advice I can give is to set aside the time for work so that you can be present with your kids. For me, I'm a full time mama, so I squeeze in my emails and editing early in the morning, during nap times and after the kids are asleep. I then shoot mostly evenings and weekends while my husband holds down the fort. Also don't be afraid to ask (or pay) for help. You can probably do it all, but you don't have to. In order to make life and business run smoother and for your sanity, take all the help you can get. I wish I figured this one out a bit sooner.

RM: The locations in your shoots are always gorgeous. What are your top 3 favorite locations for family sessions in Orange County and what makes each so special?

AM: Aw thank you! The beauty of nature is definitely my focus as far as locations. Some of my favorite spots include Thomas Riley Wilderness Park, which has so much nature variety year round. From tree covered paths to open In the springtime I adore the Northwest Open Space in San Juan, they have an entire field of wildflowers and it only happens once a year. And for beaches I love all the beaches in Corona del Mar, they offer a rocky backdrop along with water which is what I love.

RM: For families that are planning their photoshoot ensembles, are there certain clothing colors or patterns that photograph best? Any pro tips on what to avoid?

AM: I say stick with natural, neutral tones such as creams, tans, blush, soft blues and greens and bring in a slight pop of color such as mustard, dark blue, army green, something with a floral print or stripes. Coordinate without being overly matchy, the days of everyone wearing white button up shirts on the beach are a thing of the past. I'm not totally against black or brighter colors, but I recommend balancing it out with lighter pieces. Also try to stay away from patterns that are too busy.

RM: At what age would you recommend a newborn session and how far out should it be booked?

AM: Super sleepy newborn sessions are ideal between 10-14 days old, but I shoot my lifestyle newborn sessions up to one month old. I recommend booking your newborn session in your 2nd trimester to make sure you are able to get in with a photographer you love. I typically book about 6-8 weeks out (sometimes longer depending on the month), however I do always try to have some wiggle room for last minute sessions.

RM: Do you have a favorite experience you can share from one of your shoots?

AM: As a mom myself, my favorite experience is every maternity and newborn session I have. I remember the love and happiness I felt each time and falling in love with all the sights and smells of my fresh new babies. So every time I shoot these sessions, it floods my heart with so many happy, beautiful memories. So being able to capture what was such a special time for me, is truly a gift.

RM: What camera/s do you shoot with and what is your favorite lens?

AM: I use a Nikon 810 for digital and Nikon 100F when I shoot on film. My favorite lens that I use about 85% of the time is my 50mm 1.4, it's an ideal super sharp portrait lens.

RM: Always the one always behind the lens, do you like being photographed?

AM: I used to shy away from being in front of the camera, but as I have more photoshoots with my own family I am definitely becoming more comfortable. Mostly because I know the outcome I want, which are happy candid moments that capture my connection with my kids & husband. I have to put my shyness aside to capture the moments I never want to forget.

RM: What’s the best way to get in touch for scheduling a photoshoot with you?

AM: You can get in touch with me through email alexisalanaphoto@gmail.com or shoot me a Direct Message on Instagram @alexisalanaphoto. I'd love to chat!
